Yoga Therapy
What is Yoga Therapy?
“Yoga therapy is a self-empowering process, where the care-seeker, with the help of the Yoga therapist, implements a personalized and evolving Yoga practice, that not only addresses the illness in a multi-dimensional manner, but also aims to alleviate his/her suffering in a progressive, non-invasive and complementary manner. Depending upon the nature of the illness, Yoga therapy can not only be preventative or curative, but also serve a means to manage the illness, or facilitate healing in the person at all levels.” TKV Desikachar

Essentially, yoga therapy uses the many tools of yoga (not just poses!) to alleviate a wide range of health conditions (not exclusive to those listed above). The process enables you to foster independence around your own health and wellbeing and gives you tools you can use for life. It allows you to heal, shift your mindset and move towards where you want to be.
Through this therapeutic approach, I align your unique needs with tools from the tradition of yoga and medical science, such as helping to regulate your nervous system, build your self-awareness and may offer simple, appropriate lifestyle and diet adjustments to support your wellbeing. Sessions may include breathing techniques, postures, relaxation techniques and behavioural change recommendations.
What to expect:
Session One
This is an opportunity for you to share with me your unique needs and wants and for me to understand these as much as possible, to help inform the best approach. This includes an understanding of the time and space you have for ‘practice’.
Session Two
I will share your prescribed ‘practice’, which we will go through to ensure you feel confident and comfortable to do this ‘practice’ regularly on your own. I can offer this practice to you in a format that works for you, written, video, images, or a combination of these.
Further sessions will be an opportunity for review and to make any adjustments to ensure your continued progression. I meet each and every person where they are. These sessions are led by you as you know yourself best, I will compliment your knowledge with mine to help you work toward health, healing and wellbeing.
*Please note, as Yoga Therapy is such an individualised approach, results will also be unique to the individual.
Here's what some of my clients have to say about their experience of yoga therapy
Anon. Terminal Cancer Diagnosis
‘Heather has literally changed my life! The practice has given me a peace and a focus to manage each day. When I started this journey, I was chewing paracetamol and ibuprofen on a regular basis. I was struggling with anxiety regarding my condition. Since starting the yoga therapy, I rarely use painkillers. Heather has a rare and special gift’.
Anon. Anxiety and Panic Attacks
‘This experience has been genuinely life changing for me. Yoga therapy has been an amazing experience, having my very own practice catered to me and what I need, very special to me. Having someone listen and help you find a way to manage emotions that you are struggling with is a life skill that everyone needs. The pranayama for me has been a real game changer and has helped immensely with managing my anxiety, stress, and self-esteem’.
Anon. Guillain-Barré syndrome recovery
‘I will definitely be recommending yoga therapy. I’d like to thank Heather for helping me in my recovery. Her warm, friendly personality came across straight away, which put me at ease. She was a great communicator and equally as good at listening and understanding. It was clear that Heather had researched my condition and was aware of my symptoms and how she might be able to help, prior to my first session. Through the weeks, if I advised Heather of a particular issue, she would suggest a method or technique that I could put into practice to help improve it.’
Anon. Depression, Mania, Borderline Personality Disorder, Psychosis, Schizoaffective Disorder &Thyroid issues.
‘Since working with Heather and Yoga Therapy, I am doing SO well. I have not been on any psychiatric medication for a number of months now and my mental health has never been better. This is down to the yoga therapy and Heather teaching me self-awareness skills to understand myself better. Thank you.’
